A Lap for Two
When Grandpa gets a new puppy, Fifi feels a grumpy lump inside. With Momo's gentle nudge, she learns that being honest about her feelings can make room for everyone.
Fifi and Momo walked into Grandpa's house and saw a fluffy brown puppy. Grandpa was tossing a red ball on the rug. Fifi stopped, feeling a grumpy lump inside. 'Come play!' Grandpa called. But Fifi just said, 'I don't want to.'
Momo's ears drooped. 'Your smile is hiding, ' he said. Fifi looked at her feet and didn't answer.
In the garden, the puppy dropped the ball at Fifi's feet. Fifi crossed her arms. Momo nudged her. 'When I have sad words inside, my tail stops wagging, ' he said. 'Do you have sad words?' The puppy licked Fifi's hand, and a tiny giggle escaped.
Grandpa knelt. 'Fifi, you seem quiet.' Fifi's chin wobbled. 'I thought you only wanted the puppy, ' she whispered. Momo leaned on her shoe. 'Those words needed to come out.'
Grandpa pulled her into a warm hug. 'Oh, sweet pea, I need you to help me teach this puppy to fetch.' He handed her the ball. Fifi threw it far, and the puppy shot after it, with Momo bouncing behind.
They played until sunset. Fifi sat on Grandpa's lap, the puppy in her arms, Momo at their feet. 'See? Room for two, ' Grandpa said. Fifi smiled, watching the puppy's nose twitch.
