Fifi and Momo are building a sandcastle when they notice a boy watching from the fence. Can a simple invite create a new friendship?

2 min readAges 5-8

Fifi patted the sand into a lumpy tower. Momo's tail twitched as he watched a boy standing by the sandbox fence.

"Is he waiting for a turn?" Momo asked softly. Fifi looked over. The boy didn't move, just watched them with wide eyes.

Fifi's hands slowed. "I think maybe he wants to play, " she whispered. "But he's not saying anything."

Fifi took a deep breath and waved. "Hi! Do you want to dig with us?" she called. The boy looked down at his shoes.

She held out her extra shovel. "You can use this one." The boy reached over the fence and took it. His fingers curled around the handle.

They dug a deep moat together. Suddenly the castle tower collapsed with a soft plop. "Oh no!" Fifi giggled. Momo tried to pat it back together, getting sand on his nose. The boy laughed, a small sound that surprised everyone.

"Let's make it even bigger, " the boy said, his voice quiet but clear. They packed wet sand high and poked windows with a twig.

The boy picked a green leaf. He carefully stuck it on top of the castle. "A flag, " he said, and his mouth turned up at the corners.

Fifi and Momo watched the leaf flutter in the breeze. The boy's smile grew, and together they admired their work.
